Pushkar is situated 11 kms away from Ajmer. It remained a sacred site for a long time. It was an important center of Buddhism, Vaishanavism and other religion. Some inscrptions of 2nd century BCE available in the Buddhist Stupa of Sanchi mention charitable donations of Bhiksus of Pushkar named Tuda, Sanga-rakhita, Buddha-rakhita, Nagarakhita, Aya and Isidata. The Nasik cave temple inscription of 124 CE mentions that Usavadatta, the son of Dhinik and son-in-law of Nahapana visited Pushkar and took a ceremonial bath there. He also gave a village and 3000 cows in charity. No other earlier evidences of the place is known. It seems that due to a large scale destructions by the Muslims , the place was much damaged and all early evidences were destroyed. The Brahma temple, Pushkar is one of the most ancient and sacred temple of the Hindus. It is situated on the bank of holy lake and is dedicated to Lord Brahma who is creator of universe according to Hindus epics. This east facing pancharatha edifice can be approached through a flight of steps. It has double-storeyed entrance having a small domed roof. On the axial plan, the temple consists of square sanctum (garbhagriha) and vestibule (antarala), a mandapa and a mukhmandapa . The Garbhagriha has domical ceiling entered through a trishakha doorway. In the centre of sanctum ,a four faced image of Brahma is installed on a lotus pedestal. A stone inscription in the possession of the Mahant of the temple mentions about the repair of the temple durings the time of Sawai Jai Singh (1699-1743 CE).
